IFI Strategy 2017-22: Screen Refurbishment & Preservation Capacity Increase among Highlights
07 Jul 2017 : Katie McNeice
The new strategy launched by the Irish Film Institute details its core objectives across its core activities: Exhibit, Preserve and Educate, and adds a fourth institutional strand.

The launch coincides with its 25th anniversary in its landmark premises in Temple Bar. The first year of the strategic plan will see key infrastructure projects being delivered, including the refurbishment of the IFI’s two biggest exhibition screens, as well as a major renovation of its atrium roof.

Other points are an increase in capacity for preservation with climate-controlled vaults at Maynooth University and its continued assurance of screening 20% Irish titles in its main programme, and events for filmmakers. The education programme will also see the IFI establish a number of out-of-school film clubs established nationwide to establish critical engagement with young people.

Ross Keane, Director, IFI:
“Through the development of the IFI Strategy 2017-22, we wanted to ensure that the IFI continues to be one of Ireland’s most effective and influential cultural organisations, attracting a significant, loyal and engaged audience. We believe that our new Strategy responds to a changing cultural landscape and, in this special anniversary year, it sets the tone for how we want to shape the organisation’s direction over its next exciting and transformative phase.”

Margaret Kelleher, Chairperson, IFI:
The Irish Film Institute is a unique, dynamic and much-loved cultural institution. Its existing activities are central to Ireland’s contemporary cultural scene and to the safeguarding of our cultural heritage. In this our anniversary year, we are announcing an ambitious five-year programme of activities that includes significant capital refurbishment, expansion of the IFI Player and of our archival and education work, extending first-class cinematic experiences – whether in Temple Bar or online – to generations of audiences.”
