TRAVEL INFORMATION

County Tipperary , a land-locked county, is served by Iarnrod Eireann and Bus Eireann. Clonmel is 165 km from Dublin, 96 km from Cork, 100km from Shannon, and 126 km from Rosslare. Take the N7 out of Dublin branching onto the N8 to reach Tipperary.

GENERAL INFORMATION

A number of mountain ranges practically encircle what is in fact the largest inland county in Ireland. The population of County Tipperary is over 70,000 people. The land area is 225,824 hectares. The county is very scenic. The north west of the county is bordered by the magnificent Lough Derg, a large lake on the River Shannon, while the south west is protected by the Galtee Mountains, the highest inland mountain range in the country. Along the middle of the county stretches a farmland area known as The Golden Vale. It is a region noted for its dairy and cattle industry. The River Suir flows through the county on its way to Waterford and the sea, while the water content of the country is further raised by the presence of large areas of peatland.

Rail
The Dublin / Cork and Dublin / Limerick lines serve North Tipperary with stations at Templemore and Thurles, Roscrea, Cloughjordan, Nenagh and Birdhill. The other towns of Tipperary, Cahir, Clonmel and Carrick-on-Suir are served by the Waterford / Limerick line.

Ireland is linked to Britain and Europe by a number of car-ferry routes. The main ports of entry are Cork, Dublin and Rosslare.

Ireland 's transatlantic airport is situated at Shannon. Scheduled services are operated by major Irish and International airlines from and to Boston, New York, Atlanta, Chicago, and Los Angeles, with one-stop connections from most other major US cities. KEY LOCATIONS

 RURAL

The Golden Vale
This flat limestone plain, shared with County Limerick, is a huge tract of farming land, bounded by the Comeragh and Galtee Mountains and the Glen of Aherlow. This area of lush fertile land is shared with eastern Limerick.


Mountain Ranges
The Galtee and Knockmealdown ranges offer scenic hill-walking opportunities with some of the most spectacular inland views in the country. The Glen of Aherlow provides numerous popular walking trails.
Arra Mountains - there are excellent views of Lough Derg and its islands from this area. They provide the backdrop to Killaloe. Almost directly below there is the little sandy shore of Castlelough.
Silvermine Mountains - 'Keeper' is the highest peak in Co. Tipperary at 694 metres high. Sleive Felim Mountains - Mauherslieve is the highest peak here.
Timoney hills - on the Tipperary / Laois borders.
The Templederry Hills link the Silvermines ranges to Devil’s Bit, which is a gapped mountain and plateau near Templemore.


Mitchelstown Caves
Michelstown Caves are located off the N8 and have been well developed. Lit passage ways lead to three huge caverns and the " Tower of Babel" formation deep underground.


Clare Glens
Located on the Limerick / Tipperary border and named after the Clare River which runs through the area. There is some beautiful scenery here with waterfalls and small pools for swimming.


Bransha Wood
This is located on the Cahir/Tipperary Road, N24.


Dundrum
Marle Bog Development. There are a number of lakes within the forest area.


Glengarra Wood
This wood is located on the N8 south of Cahir. A youth hostel is situated here.


Killballyboy Wood
Killballboy Wood on the Clogheen to Lismore Road, on the R668. Grubb tomb overlooks the Vee scenic area and is located on this road.

 COASTAL

River Suir
This river is noted for its brown trout and is accessible at many points. Many of the county’s attractions are found along the river’s banks.

Lough Coumshingaun
Situated in the Comeragh Mountains, this lough is surrounded by cliffs and is a noted rock climbing centre. It represents one of the finest glacial rock cirques in the British Isles.

Lough Derg
Along the shores of the Shannon’s Lough Derg are many picturesque villages including Dromineer, Terryglass and Garrykennedy. The lakeside area is along Lough Derg which is 32,000 acres of water, surrounded by beautiful countryside. The area stretches from Killaloe/Ballina to Portumna and includes several miles of inland villages.

Ballinderry Island
A little island located on the Ballyfinboy River. There is a mill on this island, which was once the centre of industry and commerce.

 HISTORICAL

The Rock of Cashel
The spectacular Medieval Rock of Cashel is situated on a hilltop on the approach to Cashel, 200 ft above the ground. The site contains a stunning Romanesque Church, a Tower House, a Medieval Cathedral, a Round Tower, St.Patrick’s High Cross and the 15th century ‘Hall of Vicars’. Together these monuments create an architectural wonder.


Brú Ború, Cashel.
Brú Ború adjoins the Rock of Cashel, and incorporates a folk theatre, restaurant, craft centre, information centre and genealogy suite.


Althassel Abbey, Golden
The largest mediaeval priory in Ireland, dating from the 12th century, with very extensive outbuildings in a scenic riverside setting.


Field Monuments
Monuments such as Motte Stone and Ring Forts can be found throughout the county. Some examples include Killeen Motte and Bailey beside the village of Riverstown.


High Crosses
Irish High Crosses from the 8th and 9th centuries can be found in locations such as Ahenny, the Rock of Cashel, and St.Patrick's Well at Clonmel.


Cahir Castle
Cahir Castle is one of Ireland’s largest and best preserved castles situated on the rocky island on the river Suir.


Cashel Folk Village
A folk village providing a reconstruction of various traditional thatched village shops, a forge and other businesses. There is also a penal Chapel near to the Rock of Cashel.


Dromineer Castle
A Norman ruin located in Dromineer. The village had also been a busy port from which barges carried agricultural produce to Dublin via the middle Shannon and the Grand Canal, and returned with products.


Holy Cross Abbey
Located 6.4 km south of Thurles on the banks of the River Suir.


Nenagh Castle
Built in the early thirteenth century, this castle keep has walls 20ft deep and rises to 100ft.


Loughmore Castle
Situated outside the town of Thurles, near the banks of the River Suir.


Lorrha
This is an historic village which contains many ruins of the early Christian period and nearby Redwood and Lackeen Castles.


Shanballydesmond Court Tomb
Situated in the area of Rear Cross, North Tipperary.


Ballaghmore Castle
This castle is situated on the N7, midway between Roscrea and Borris-in-Ossary.

 INTERIORS

Cahir Ormonde Castle , Carrick-on-Suir.
Ormond Castle is the best example of an Elizabethan manor house in Ireland. It was built by Thomas, the 10th Earl of Ormond in the 1560s. Two 15th Century towers are closely integrated into the manor house. The ‘state rooms’ contain some of the finest decorative plasterwork in the country.


G.P.A Bolton Library, Cashel
This library holds a collection of antiquarian books and rare manuscripts dating from the 12th century. There is also a show of altarware that was used in the original cathedral on the Rock of Cashel.


Swiss Cottage, Kilcommon, Cahir
This cottage was built in the early 1800s by Richard Butler, 1st Earl of Glengall, designed by the Regency architect John Nash. The interior contains a spiral staircase and some beautifully decorated rooms.

 URBAN

Cahir
A picturesque town on the River Suir. Cahir Castle - one of Ireland's largest and best preserved castles - is situated on a rocky island on the River. Also in the town are the impressive ruins of Cahir Abbey.


Carrick-on-Suir
This small country town, on the River Suir, houses the 15th century Dukes of Ormonde castle and an Elizabethan fortified mansion.


Cashel
A very ancient town best known for the famous Rock of Cashel - a large Cathedral, Round Tower and Romanesque Chapel perched on a dramatic outcrop of limestone rock. This location offers superb views over the extensive and beautiful plains of the county.


Clonmel
This is one of Munsters biggest and most attractive towns. It is situated in the south of the county on the Suir and is surrounded by the Comeragh Mountains to the south and Slievenamon stands to the west. The buildings of interest here include the Classical-style Main Guard, and the Wesleyan Church.


Dromineer
Dromineer is located 8 km from the bustling market town of Nenagh, and on the widest part of Lough Derg (16 km across).


Nenagh
Located less than 10 miles away from the spectacular Lough Derg on the River Shannon, and closeby to the Silvermine and Arra Mountains. Keeper Hill, south of Nenagh offers a panoramic view of the surrounding scenic countryside - lakes, mountains, rivers, valleys. Nenagh Castle is a main attraction in the town.


Roscrea
A designated Bord Failte ' Heritage Town'. Roscrea was founded in the 7th century by the monks of St. Cronan's Abbey. The ruins of this monastery can still be seen today, along with some other attractive locations such as the remains of a 15th century Franciscan Friary, Roscrea Castle and Damer House. The town's monastic traditions are being carried on today by the monks of Mount St. Joseph in their monastery 3 km from the town.


Thurles
The largest town in North Tipperary, Thurles is set within the valley of the River Suir and bounded by the Silvermine Mountains to the northwest and the Slieveardagh Hills to the south-east. The countryside around this area is very scenic - green pastures, golden cornfields, rugged uplands. The famous Holy Cross Abbey is located outside the town of Thurles.


Tipperary
This town, built on the River Suir, lies close to the scenic Glen of Aherlow and the Galtee Mountains. Of special interest are the vibrant coloured shop-fronts and the intricate tracery of its streets and public areas.


Terryglass in Slevoir Bay
This is one of Ireland’s tidiest places having won the National Tidy Towns Award and many regional and county awards.
