KEY LOCATIONS

 RURAL

Countryside
Roscommon is mostly flat and low-lying, but it is scattered with small lakes. It is the only county in Connacht without a sea-coast. Much of the county is bog or grassland but the Curlew Mountains on the Sligo and Leitrim border raise the land. The lakes and moors of the Arigna Mountains are in the north of the county.

Lough Key Forest Park
Located outside Boyle in the old Rockingham estate, this park includes a temple, stable block, church, a disused castle and an ice-house. One of its most interesting features is the group of subterranean passages used by the servants. Boat hire is available on the lake .

 COASTAL

Rivers and Lakes
The western border of Roscommen is bounded by the upper reaches of the Shannon and Lough Ree. The River Suck flows through the west of the county.

Lough Key
In the extreme north of Roscommon, lies this island filled lake, surrounded by attractive woodland scenery. From the jetty, a river bus visits Trinity, Church and Castle Islands which contain medieval ruins.

Lakes
Lough O’ Flynn and Lough Glinn are situated close to the town of Castlerea.

 HISTORICAL

Boyle Abbey
This Cistercian monastery was founded in the 12th century under the patronage of the local ruling family, the McDermots. It remains impressive despite being used as a military garrison during the 17th and 18th centuries.

Clonalis House
Located in Castlerea this house is the ancestral home of the O’Conor clan, the last High Kings of Ireland. The house is Victorian in style and contains a chapel and an interesting manuscript room.

Roscommon Castle .
An enormous and well-preserved castle, built by the Normans in 1269. The rectangular castle has 16th century mullioned windows.

Rathcroghan, Tulsk
According to myth Rathcroghan was a fairy dwelling and a cave that was supposed to be an entrance to the underworld. There are many legends about this area.

St.John’s Church
Situated in Strokestown, this church designed in 1819 houses the County Heritage Centre.

Elphin Cathredral
St Patrick founded a church in this area. The cathredral contains the tombs of early bishops and members of the Goldsmith family.

Tulsk
Tulsk marks one of the great centres of ancient Ireland – a collection of seventy megalithic monuments and eighty ring forts.

 INTERIORS

Glencarne Country House
A large Georgian house run by the Harrington family. A golf course is situated 1 km from the house. The house can be found on the N4 route between Carrick-on-Shannon and Boyle.

Strokestown Park House.
An enormous estate surrounded by a castellated wall and three Gothic arches. The comfortable interior consists of a living room, a spacious library, dining room and old school room. The kitchen has a fascinating feature, a glass gallery that runs the length, allowing the lady of the house to observe the work being done without having to enter the room.

 URBAN

Roscommon
The busy market town of Roscommon is located at the meeting of the main Galway to Longford and Sligo to Athlone roads. It contains ruins of a Dominican establishment and a restored Market House. The County Jail, a shopping centre, has a unique serrated top. The jail was once the scene for all public hangings. The church in the town houses a museum of local history.

Castlerea
This historic town boasts the birthplace of Sir William Wilde, father of dramatist Oscar. Here also is the grave of Douglas Hyde, the first President of the Republic. An ancient High Cross stands at Emlagh, two miles to the south.

Strokestown
Situated in the east of county Roscommon, this has the appearance of a planned town and was once the centre of one of the biggest estates in the county.

Frenchpark
This town on the N5 contains the Douglas Hyde Interpretive Centre situated in the old church of Ireland. Hyde, one of the founders of the Gaelic League, is buried in the graveyard here.

Boyle
This town is the site of Boyle Abbey, a Cistercian monastery founded in the 12th century. Boyle is also the location of the greatest estate in Roscommon, Rockingham, which is now Lough Key Forest Park. King House, a stone mansion built in 1730, is at the centre of the town.
