Take the N3 from Dublin to arrive in Cavan. Although there are no rail services to the county, Bus Eireann provide services to Cavan from Dublin, Belfast, Galway and surrounding counties.
GENERAL INFORMATION
Cavan is a land-locked county, but its variety of waterways offer beautiful scenic and activity based resources. The Shannon-Erne Waterway links the two main rivers which have their sources in the area. The county is most renowned for its fishing.

Knock International Airport is a growing airport with a £30 million industrial zone development plan. Knock has two Ryanair flights a day to Stanstead, three in the high season, with four British Airways flights a week to Manchester, and one Aer Lingus flight per week to Birmingham. Killykeen Forest Park
This is located near Cavan Town. It is a 600 acre forest and nearby self-catering chalets are by the shore of Lough Oughter.


Dun-a-Ri Forest park
Located near Kingscourt, the forest covers 558 acres. The park is famous for its "wishing well" and wide variety of shrubs and rhodendrons.


Mullameen Beech Forest Park
Mullameen overlooks Lough Sheelin.

 COASTAL

River Erne
Cavan has some of Europe's most beautiful lakes and waterways. The River Erne rises in Lough Gowna and flows northwards through the centre of the county spreading into a group of lakes ideal for angling and watersports.

Lough Oughter
Lough Oughter lies south of the cruiser base at Belturbet, and has a fine amenity in Kilykeen Forest Park. Tree-clad islands are interwoven with lakes.

Lough Sheelin
A lake situated near the source of the Erne River.

The Shannon-Erne Waterway
The old Ballinamore-Ballyconnell Canal has been reopened and links the Shannon and Erne.

 HISTORICAL

Cavan Folk Museum, Cornafean
This museum is known as the "Pig House Collection" with more than 3,000 items including costumes, books, kitchen and household goods, farmyard tools and machinery reflecting the rural life-style from the 1700s to the present.


Finn McCool's Fingers
Bronze Age Stones, located at Shantemon near Cavan Town.


Farnham House
Just west of Cavan Town this house and demesne dates from 1700 and covers a 3000-acre area of woodland.


Cloughoughter Castle
Situated on an islet in Lough Oughter, lies this 13th century ruin in which Owen Roe O’Neill died.

 URBAN

Cavan Town
This town is the capital of the most southerly county of the province of Ulster. It stands in an area of low hills east of Lough Oughter. It is the site of a Franciscan Friary founded in 1300. A plaque here commemorates the victory of Owen Roe O’Neill in the 1646 Battle of Benburb.


Virginia
On the border with Meath, Virginia sits on the north shore of Lough Ramor, which has several islets and is a good base for fishing.


Belturbet
This small town is located a few miles north of Lough Oughter and is an angling and boating resort with a new marina.
