Work Begins on National Film School Building
29 Jul 2010 | Work is to begin in two weeks on the site of IADT's new National Film School. The project, which has been awarded €5 million by Minister for Education and Skills, Mary Coughlan TD, will see the building of Ireland's first HD television studio. The building is to open for Sep/Oct 2011. 
£22m Return in NIS Financial Report
28 Jul 2010 | Northern Ireland Screen‘s annual report for the year 2009 - 2010 has been published and shows a return of £22 million to the local economy through the group’s main production investment fund. One of the biggest success stories for the group was ‘Your Highness’ which brought in £11.78 million of this. 
UK Film Council to be Abolished?
27 Jul 2010 | John Woodward, CEO of the UK Film Council has today announced that the UK Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has informed him of its intention to abolish the UK Film Council. The decision comes in the wake of Britain’s Culture Secretary, Jeremy Hunt proposing the closure of the group. 
Rebecca O’Brien Talks Co-Production
26 Jul 2010 | As part of this year’s Galway Film Fleadh Media Antenna’s Irish contingent, fronted by Eibhlín Ní Mhunghaile, hosted a co-producers’ dinner. Rebecca O’Brien (who has produced twelve of Ken Loach’s films since ‘Hidden Agenda’ in 1990) was invited to make a key note speech after dinner; her key points are reproduced below: 
State Assets Review Group Target RTÉ & TG4
23 Jul 2010 | Minister for Finance Brian Lenihan has established a specific Group to examine state assets and liabilities and to advise him on how the assets can be better used or disposed of to support economic growth and national investment priorities. The Group, chaired by co-author of last year’s so-called ‘Bord Snip Nua’ report, has already begun its task of examining selected public-sector assets, including commercial State companies such as RTÉ, ESB and TG4. 
Windmill Lane Opens 'Lock Out', 36 VFX Jobs Created
16 Jul 2010 | Irish post house, Windmill Lane Pictures is currently creating a new film visual effects production facility in Sandyford in order to carry out post production work on 'Lock Out’ [working title], a new sci-fi feature film that is to start shooting in Belgrade towards the end of the year. Windmill Lane will produce all the visual effects its new Dublin facility. 
IFB Wants Filmmakers' Signatures
14 Jul 2010 | The deadline for the Irish Film Board's flagship short film scheme, Signatures, has been announced as Friday, September 3rd. The scheme looks to aid the making of live-action, fiction films that act as a proving-ground for Irish creative talents. 
Simon Perry Leaving Irish Film Board
13 Jul 2010 | The Board of the Irish Film Board (IFB) has announced that it will be seeking to appoint a new Chief Executive to commence at the start of January 2011. This date coincides with the ending of the five year term of appointment of the existing Chief Executive, Simon Perry who took up office in January 2006. 
SPI & IFB Help Resolve Disputes
06 Jul 2010 | The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), through its Arbitration and Mediation Center, has developed customised Mediation and Expedited Arbitration procedures for film and media disputes. Screen Producers Ireland and the Irish Film Board will host a launch of these rules in Galway on Thursday, July 8th. 
'Easter Sixteen' Becomes 'Easter Rising'
02 Jul 2010 | Feature film project ‘Easter Sixteen’ about the 1916 Easter Uprising in Dublin has been optioned by UK financier Peter Lukas who will produce along with co-author of the award-winning screenplay Brendan Foley (Johnny Was, The Riddle) under the new title of ‘Easter Rising’. 
'La Mula' Finished by Sébastien Grousset
01 Jul 2010 | The saga of the troubled production of ‘La Mula’ continues with the news that director Sébastien Grousset has concluded shooting of the film following the departure of director Michael Radford (The Merchant of Venice) from the film’s set in November of last year. 
TV3 Appoints Director of Online
01 Jul 2010 | TV3 has announced the appointment of Stephen Grant as Director of Online. This is a new position which the broadcaster has introduced to reflect the growing significance of online within the overall strategy for TV3 Group. 
BAI Awards TV funds of €7 million
30 Jun 2010 | The Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI) has announced the latest funding decisions of Sound & Vision II – the Broadcasting Funding Scheme. Grants totaling €7 million approximately have been awarded, in principle, to support the production of 38 television projects – all exploring the themes of Irish Culture, Heritage and Experience. 
ILBF Announces Latest Funding Decisions
30 Jun 2010 | Following the recent meeting of the Investment Committee of the Irish Language Broadcast Fund (ILBF) several funding decisions have been announced. Awards were made across of a wide genre of programming, including single documentaries, documentary series, factual entertainment, and re-versioned animation. 
Niall Cogley Steps Down as Setanta CEO
29 Jun 2010 | Niall Cogley is soon to exit his position of CEO of Setanta Sports to undertake a new undisclosed venture. The position will be filled in the interim by Setanta’s co-founder Michael O’Rourke whilst a permanent replacement is sought. 
Proposed UKFC / BFI Merger Scrapped
23 Jun 2010 | British Creative Industries Minister Ed Vaizey announced yesterday, June 22, that there are “no current plans” to merge UK Film Council and British Film Institute, thus ending a long period of speculation that the two bodies would amalgamate. 
Shortlist of Filmbase/RTÉ Short Film Awards Revealed
17 Jun 2010 | Ten projects have been shortlisted for the first round of the Filmbase/RTÉ Short Film Awards 2010. The projects were chosen from over 280 applications sent in to Filmbase in February of this year. The application deadline for the next round is Friday, June 25th. 
Irish Script Writers to Examine ‘Stigma’
15 Jun 2010 | TG4 in association with the ILBF & BBC NI are inviting new or experienced Irish language writers to apply to a Scriptwriting Development Scheme. Up to six places are available to Irish speaking writers interested in writing drama for television. 
Pitching Time at Fleadh
10 Jun 2010 | The 22nd Galway Film Fleadh has announced that its Pitching Award will once again take place during the week of the Fleadh which will take place from Tuesday July 6th to Sunday July 11th. The deadline for submissions for the award is Friday, 18th June. 
RTÉ Scores Premier League Highlights Deal
03 Jun 2010 | RTÉ Television has been awarded the rights to broadcast Barclays Premier League soccer highlights for three seasons up to and including the 2012/2013 season. RTÉ Television’s team of analysts and commentators will deliver in excess of 40 programmes per season covering a wide range of Barclays Premier League matches throughout the next three years.
