Mark O'Halloran is UCC Film Artist in Residence 2017-8

This one-year post is jointly funded by the Arts Council and the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences, UCC.

Each year, Film and Screen Media at University College Cork hosts a Film Artist in Residence. The post is intended to provide a screenwriter with a unique opportunity to develop his/her practice in a university environment. The post makes an invaluable contribution to UCC Film and Screen Media’s aim of bringing creative practitioners and Industry professionals to the University, and has provided students with specialised mentorship and collaboration from experts in the field. The artists, too, have benefitted from new partnerships and from being immersed in the university setting.

Mark O‘Halloran is a writer/ actor and is from Co. Clare, Ireland. As an actor he has worked with all the major theatre companies in Ireland, most recently in the acclaimed production of “The Importance of Nothing” with Pan Pan theatre company and “The Shadow of a Gunman” with The Abbey Theatre Dublin. On screen he has appeared in numerous films, most notably as one of the eponymous heroes in ‘Adam & Paul’, for which he also wrote the screenplay and the lead role of MP in ‘History’s Future’ directed by Fiona Tan for which he was nominated as Best Actor at IFTA awards 2017. He also appears in ‘The Guard’ and ‘Calvary’ and ‘Viva’, a film set in Havana for which he also wrote the screenplay.

Mark‘s other writing credits include the multi award winning film ‘Garage’, the television series ‘Prosperity’ and ‘Viva’ . For the stage he has written the play ‘Trade’ and most recently contributed text to the award winning theatre production ‘Lippy’.

Mark has been nominated for numerous awards including a European Film Award for the screenplay of ‘Adam & Paul’, Irish Film and Television Academy, where he won for both “Best Screenplay“ and “Best TV writer“ 2007. He also won the London Evening Standard award for “Best Screenplay” in 2005. ‘Trade’” was named as “best play” at the Irish Theatre Awards 2012. ‘Lippy was “Best Production” at 2014 Irish Theatre Awards as well as winning a Fringe First at Edinburgh and 2 Obie Awards in New York. ‘Viva’ was shortlisted for Best Foreign Language Oscar and nominated for Best Screenplay at the IFTA awards 2016. Mark was also nominated as “Best Actor” in the Irish Times Theatre Awards for his performance as Donal Davoren in the Abbey Theatre’s production of ‘Shadow of a Gunman’.

Other screenplays include ‘Halal Daddy’ which will be released in 2017, ‘Lane’ a television script that films this summer, directed by Thaddeus O’Sullivan, and also ‘Trade’, which goes into production in late summer 2017.


UCC’s inaugural Film Artist in Residence (2014-5) was the award-winning director/writer, Carmel Winters (Snap; B for Baby; Salt Mountain). Carmel delivered classes on screenwriting to UCC Film and Screen Media students, and provided mentorship throughout their studies. During the course of her residency, she produced at play at the Everyman Theatre in Cork, Witness; conducted a public interview at Cork Film Festival; and worked on a variety of projects that have since been premiered in Dublin and Cork.

UCC’s second Film Artist in Residence was the acclaimed screenwriter and director, Gerard Stembridge (Guiltrip; About Adam; Ordinary Decent Criminal). Gerry offered lectures and workshops on screenwriting; provided mentorship for student films; and worked on the screenplay for his film,The Randomer (2016). Gerry also gave audiences at UCC a unique chance to sit in on a run-through of the working script for The Randomer, and organised a workshop on screenwriting at the Cork Film Festival.

The outgoing (2016-7) Film Artist in Residence is the award-winning screenwriter and playwright, Hugh Travers (Trial of the Century; Red Rock; Lambo). Hugh joined us in September and delivered lectures and workshops to our undergraduate and postgraduate students. His mentorship, particularly of the masters students, has proven invaluable and he also participated in a roundtable discussion on film, history and race at the Cork Film Festival. Additionally, Hugh delivered a talk on the challenges of working in both television and theatre, and on handling historical material. Hugh used his residency to work on a variety of projects for theatre.
