 COASTAL

Coastline
County Meath barely touches the coastline, but where it does, the beaches are pleasant, the largest being the resort at Bettystown.

Rivers
The impressive Boyne and Blackwater rivers flow through the county. The Boyne, one of Ireland’s most important and historic rivers, offers up a vast and fertile valley, “The Valley of the Kings”.

 HISTORICAL

Newgrange
The passage grave at Newgrange in the Boyne Valley is over 4000 years old. This area along with the other sites at Dowth and Knowth, is known as Bru na Boinne. Twelve standing stones remain of the celebrated Great Circle. The mound over the tomb is over 36ft high at the front and white quartz stones were used as the outside layer. A stone passage runs right into the heart of the mound and examples of megalithic art can be seen on several stones, including spirals, concentric circles and rays. A narrow slit in the roofbox allows the rising sun to shine briefly on the floor of the chamber each Winter’s Solstice.

Hill of Tara, Navan.
This is the location of the seat of the ‘High Kings’ of Ireland. It was the most important centre of political and religious power in Pre-Christian Ireland. A modern statue of St. Patrick and some mounds of earthworks remain. The pillar stone at the hillcrest is the 'Lia Fail', coronation stone of the early kings.

Athlumney Castle
Located in Navan, this ruined 15th century castle is adjoined by a Manor House, containing an impressive interior.

Loughcrew, Corstown, Oldcastle.
Loughcrew is the site of a group of passage tombs dating from 3000BC.

Castle Keep, Trim.
This enormous 75ft tall, 16 sided castle keep now lies in neglect. It was occupied by King John in 1210 and was once one of Ireland’s largest and strongest Norman forts. The castle was used as a location for "Braveheart".

Ollamh Fodhla’s Chair, Loughcrew Hills.
This huge carved rock with a seat-like cavity is named after a law maker who died before 10,000BC and whose tomb is believed to be there.

Kells Monastry
This was the famous site from which monks fled to Iona, the same monks who allegedly produced the Book of Kells. Also in the area are St. Columba’s House and a number of High Crosses.

Donore Castle
This town with its three-storey, ten pound castle, was the site from which King James launched his forces in the Battle of the Boyne.
