Sea
Ireland is linked to Britain and Europe by a number of car-ferry routes. The main ports of entry are Cork, Rosslare and Dun Laoghaire, Dublin.
Airports
Dublin Airport is situated approximately 6 miles outside the city centre. It is capable of catering for all major trans-Atlantic and world-wide jet aircraft, and is at present undergoing a major re-development. The Dublin-London route is now the busiest route in Europe even surpassing the London-Paris route. Dublin is now the seventh fastest-growing airport in the world, according to Aer Rianta.

RURAL
Countryside
County Louth is hilly in parts, rising to mountains in the northeast.
Slieve Foye Forest Park
This park of trails, north of Carlingford has scenic views over the lough.
Cooley Peninsula
The Cooley area is a walkers retreat with the 1935ft Carlingford Mountain as the focus.
COASTAL
Coastline
The coastline has a couple of sandy beaches, notably the resorts at Bettystown and Clogher head. There is a nice scenic drive, with views of the Mourne and Cooley ranges, located outside the town of Annagassan.
Carlingford Lough
Situated between the Cooley and Mourne mountains, this fjord-like lough is surrounded by woodland slopes. The resort of Warrenpoint is nearby. Other safe beaches are at Gyles Quay and Shelling Hill.
Blackrock
Blackrock is the seaside suburb of Dundalk and also has a racecourse.
HISTORICAL
Mellifont Abbey, Tullallen.
This was Ireland’s first Cistercian monastery, built in 1142 by the Archbishop of Armagh, its most unique feature being its octagonal lavabo. The square gate house still stands at 50ft but the ruins of the abbey are slight. The chapter house with its beautiful groined roof is well preserved.
Millmount
Located on the south side of Drogheda, this is a huge circular grass mound surrounded by a low wall, used by the Vikings as a ceremonial meeting place.
Beaulieu House
This house built after Cromwell’s departure is noted for its interior. It has a hipped roof in the artisan style and an interesting gallery.
St. Peter’s Church.
Situated in West Street, Drogheda, St.Peter's Church contains the head of St. Oliver Plunkett, executed in 1681.
Monasterboice
This 5th century monastic settlement is located north of Drogheda. The ruins of the monastery are located in a graveyard. The famous Muirdach’s Cross here features scenes from the Bible.
St. Mary’s Abbey, Drogheda.
A central tower and two pointed arches remain from this 1206 Augustinian abbey.
Dundalk Courthouse
This building by Edward Park is based on the portico design and dimensions of the Temple of Theseus in Athens.
St. Patrick’s Church, Dundalk
This perpendicular church dates from 1835 and is built from Newry granite, based on King’s College, Cambridge.
Jumping Church
Located in Kildemock, near Ardee, this small ruin, contains a fascinating wall which for some reason, either mythical of geographical, has been stripped of its foundations and stands alone.
St Mochta’s Church.
This 12th century church, located in Louth Village has a distinctive vaulted roof. Also in the fown is the 14th century Louth Abbey.
Proleek Dolmen
Located at the Cooley Peninsula, this dolmen boasts a huge 46 tonne capstone. Also in the area is a Bronze Age, gallery grave.

URBAN
Drogheda
Situated near mouth of the Boyne River, on the main Dublin-Belfast road, Drogheda is a historic and growing industrial town. The Vikings settled here in 911 and until 1412 the river divided two warring towns. In 1649 it was the site of a massacre by Cromwell’s troops.
Ardee
The name of this town commemorates the legendary battle between Cuchulainn, leader of the Red Branch Knights and Ferdia. Some of the town’s buildings include Ardee Castle, now a courthouse, St. Mary’s Church and Hatch’s Castle.
Dundalk
Dundalk is situated on the N1 halfway between Dublin and Belfast. Historically it marked the northernmost point of the Pale. The County Museum is located in an 18th century distillery in the town.
Carlingford
This attractive little town is situated between the Cooley Peninsula and Carlingford Lough. The Holy Trinity Heritage Centre is located here, in a medieval church. The Carlingford Adventure Centre provides information on the area.
Termonfeckin
Termonfeckin is a picturesque, quiet town, situated in wooded countryside. A 15th century castle with a corbelled roof is located in the town. There is also a 10th century high cross at St.Feckin’s Church.
