TRAVEL INFORMATION
The N4 from Dublin takes you directly to Longford Town.The Dublin-Sligo railway line serves Longford with stations at Mostrim (Edgeworthstown) and Longford Town. Bus Eireann provide services to County Longford from Dublin, Sligo and Galway. Longford is approximately a 2 hour drive from both Knock Airport and Dublin Airport.
GENERAL INFORMATION

Longford lies in the Shannon basin, providing much of the county with fertile land. Longford town is the administrative focus for the county. The county's main attraction is fishing around Lough Ree.

Ireland is linked to Britain and Europe by a number of car-ferry routes. The main ports of entry are Cork, Dublin and Rosslare.

Airports

Knock International Airport is a growing airport with a £30 million industrial zone development plan. Knock has two Ryanair flights a day to Stanstead, three in the high season, with four British Airways flights a week to Manchester, and one Aer Lingus flight per week to Birmingham.  RURAL

Countryside
The landscape of Longford is predominantly very flat and barely rises above a few hills.


Moyne
A picturesque area situated on the Longford / Cavan road 7 miles from the village of Drumlish and close to the Cavan border. Rolling hills, bogland and numerous lakes are notable features in this area.


Corlea Trackway Visitor Centre
The centre interprets an Iron Age bog road, the largest of its kind to be uncovered in Europe dating from 148BC.

Lakes
Lakes in the county and surrounding areas include Lough Ree, Lough Iron, Glen Lough, Lough Kinsale, Lough Sheelin, Lough Gowna and Lough Forbes.

Rivers
RiverTang, Rath River, Black River, River Inny, River Riffey, River Camlin, Fallan River, Royal Canal and of course the Shannon.

Inchcleraun ( Quaker Island)
An island on Lough Ree where a monastery was founded in the 6th century. There are a number of ruins of Churches on the island.

 HISTORICAL

Carriglass Manor
This is the seat of the descendants of Huguenot Lefroys. The architecture is Tudor-Gothic Revival. The stables were designed by James Gandon and have pedimented and rusticated archways.


Granard Motte
Located at Granard is the largest Norman motte in the country. There is a statue of St. Patrick at the peak.

 URBAN

Abbeylara
A small village 3 miles south-east of Granard, and located less than a mile away from the shores of Lough Kinsale. The area is rich in old ruins and ancient megalithic sites.


Abbeyshrule
This town is situated east of Ballymahon in a picturesque valley between the River Inny and Rath River. The Royal Canal passes through Abbeyshrule on its way from Shannon to Dublin, and the Whitworth Aquaduct in the village was built to carry the canal over the River Inny. The only airfield in the midlands is located in Abbeyshrule, and has a 575m runway.


Ardagha
A designated ' Heritage Village' and past-winner of the national Tidy Towns Award, Ardagh Village is situated on a tributary off the Royal Canal, very near to the town of Edgesworthstown. Ardagh was a planned estate village and the town clock and houses are unique for their Swiss design.


Aughnacliffe
This village is located to the south-west of the Gowna lakes and attractive views of the lakes and surrounding countryside can be seen from various locations around the area. A huge dolmen is located outside the village.


Ballinalee
A picturesque village situated approximately 7 miles west of Granard, and beside a tributary of the River Camlin.


Ballymahon
Ballymahon is situated on the River Inny near the heart of Goldsmith country and a couple of miles from the shores of Lough Ree. In the town, the wide streets and colourful shopfronts make an attractive picture.


Barley Harbour
Just across from Quaker Island on Lough Ree lies the secluded Barley Harbour. The harbour itself has been considerably reconstructed in recent years and with adjoining Elfeet Bay is one of the most attractive and scenic locations on Lough Ree.


Clondra
An attractive village 5 miles west of Longford which forms the Royal Canal's terminal with the River Shannon. The stone-cut harbour known as Richmond Harbour is one of the most imposing on the Shannon. The old stone mill with its weir and mill pond is another fine building in the village.


Drumlis
The village of Drumlish is west of a ridge of low hills running north-eastwards from Newtownforbes to Arva in Co. Cavan. The village is the starting point for the climb of Cairn Hill.


Edgeworthstown (Mostrim)
This busy town is located on the N4. Edgeworthstown House once the home of the famous Edgeworth family is now a nursing home.


Granard
A thriving market town on a busy north / south route (N55), a couple of miles from both Lough Kinsale, Lough Sheelin and the Gowna Lakes. The Town Hall is an impressive building in the town.


Longford
The county town and main administrative centre, Longford is located on the south bank of the River Camlin and on the main Dublin / Sligo road. The town has wide streets and some interesting buildings. 19th century St. Mel's Cathedral is the most imposing building in the area with its high dome visible from a distance outside the town. 7 miles north of the town lies Cairn Hill which stands 300m above sea level and offers a panoramic view from its summit.


Lanesboro
Located on the River Shannon at the northern entrance to Lough Ree. Rathcline Castle ruins, the de Lacy Castle and Clontuskert Abbey are all located in the area.


Newtowncashel
This town is located only a couple of miles from the shores of Lough Ree in a picturesque setting of boglands and woodlands. Elfeet Bay, and Barley Harbour are in the nearby vicinity.
